Canada welcomes progress made to date on the inclusion of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) planning in integrated peacekeeping missions, as well as the development of policies, guidelines and procedures for the planning and implementation of DDR in a peacekeeping context.

In that context, we welcome the work initiated by the Secretariat to develop a set of policies, guidelines and procedures for planning, implementing and monitoring DDR.

Use gender analysis as a tool for the integration of a gender dimension into the planning and implementation of policies, strategies and programs on poverty eradication.

The results should especially have medium and long term preventive effects by being incorporated into national population policies and national and international environmental and developmental planning.

Crime and development was the overall theme, and special emphasis was given to (a) incorporation of prevention policies into development planning (b) organization of research on social defence policies and community based prevention and (c) public participation in crime prevention.

Combating gender and racial inequality by including these themes as transversal to the general policies, both in the 2004 2007 Multi Year Plan and in the system to evaluate the Sectored Policies of the Ministry of Planning, Budgeting and Management.
