The First National Conference on Aquaculture and Fishing was held in November 2003.

62. FAO was drafting an international code of conduct for responsible fishing that would cover general principles and six thematic areas fishing operations, research, management, aquaculture, trade and integrated management of coastal zones.

We also support the calls in this year's draft resolution on fisheries for renewed efforts to achieve sustainable aquaculture, to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and to address fishing overcapacity and harmful subsidies.

However, the North Province and Loyalty Islands authorities are expanding their fishing fleets and aquaculture has expanded rapidly in the past 10 years.31

Such strategies could be organized around four pillars fishing agreements, improved access to international markets, development of aquaculture and better access to finance.
