Our Organization has been plagued by allegations of corruption and abuse.

The total number of 121 allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse registered in 2004 was more than double the 53 allegations reported in 2003.

The international community will not accept this form of massive preventive detention, with continuing allegations of abuse and torture.

The status of those allegations are laid out in the investigation by the Office of the Internal Oversight Services into allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse in MONUC (A 59 661).

Over the past year, the number of allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse against United Nations peacekeeping personnel has increased significantly.

The Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) of the United Nations has conducted an investigation into the allegations of sexual abuse (including in Ituri) within MONUC.

It adds that the allegations with respect to certain judges of the Plock District Court are defamatory and constitute an abuse of the right of submission.

Amid rising allegations of abuse, President George W. Bush s government realized some time ago that it could not maintain its Guantánamo detention camp forever.

Some detainees have reported abuse and ill treatment at the time of arrest and human rights observers have observed injuries consistent with such allegations.

To this end, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations has focused over the past year on raising the awareness of those with managerial and command responsibilities to address sexual exploitation and abuse training on established standards of conduct and investigations into allegations of abuse.

The Department is cooperating closely with OIOS, which, under General Assembly resolution 59 287, is in charge of investigating allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse in peacekeeping operations.
