In collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Services, the Centre will set up receivers for satellite meteorological data at appropriate locations in the country for operational and research purposes.

Furthermore, a number of governmental institutions, such as the National Cartographic Centre, the Meteorological Organization and the Geological Survey of Iran, will provide their professional expertise and facilities to enhance the academic standard of the planned centre.

The infrastructure of WMO to support such an initiative comes from its scientific and technical programmes and its network of regional specialized meteorological centres, world meteorological centres and the national meteorological and hydrological services.

The members of that organization would be the directors of national meteorological services.

Other examples of national and regional centres include the Renewable Energy Centre (Barbados), the National Documents Centre (Burkina Faso), the National Climate Research Centre (Georgia), and the Sea Level Monitoring Centre (Kiribati).

The National Meteorological Database in Chile is reported to store climate information and have a comprehensive database dating back to 1950.

A network of 19 national tsunami focal points had been established to receive advisory information from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre and the Japan Meteorological Agency and existing observational networks had been upgraded to enable them to transmit real time information regarding tsunamis.

Australia also plans to undertake, through its Bureau of Meteorology, a joint feasibility study with the World Meteorological Organization for the establishment of a network linking the two drought monitoring centres in Nairobi and Harare with the African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development, in Niamey.

The Commission also established a media centre in the Iraqi National Convention Centre located within the international zone.
