VIII. CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF LIVING MARINE RESOURCES

Advisory services will be provided in the development of capabilities for exploration, exploitation and management of the living and non living resources of the sea.

18. The obligation on States to cooperate in the conservation and management of living resources of the high seas is set out in article 118.

Some delegations stressed the importance of the application of the ecosystem and precautionary approaches in the conservation and management of marine living resources.

Ms. Frida Armas Pfirter (Argentina) presented a paper on the legal implications related to the management of seabed living resources in the Area.

6. The Convention establishes a general obligation on all States to cooperate in the conservation and management of the living resources of the high seas.

UNEP has closely linked global programmes on the conservation, management and monitoring of the marine environment and its living resources.

Improved management practices in human resources management

(i) Article 118 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982, Cooperation of States in the conservation and management of living resources

29. Women living in poverty are competent actors in the development process and in the effective management of scarce resources, but they are often not allowed to perform this task fully.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea recognizes the responsibility of coastal States for the sustainable management of living resources in their maritime zones.

The Convention provides, in its part VII, for a set of rules to regulate the management and the conservation of the living resources of the high seas.
