Issuance of certified emission reductions

The CDM allows Annex I countries to obtain credit for emissions reductions resulting from investments in project activities in developing countries. Annex I countries may use certified CDM emissions reductions to help them comply with their emissions targets.

At the very least, markets like ETS should credit emissions reductions that result from limiting deforestation.

Over the next half century, even large reductions in CO2 emissions would have only a negligible impact.

It is tempting to believe that renewable energy sources are responsible for emissions reductions, but the numbers clearly say otherwise.

The Kyoto Protocol allows countries to meet their target reductions of CO2 emissions by substituting bio fuels for fossil fuels.

Most developed countries are targeting reductions in annual emissions of at least 80 relative to levels in 1990 by 2050.

It is now clear that avoiding catastrophic climate change requires dramatic and rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, cuts that would lower annual emissions to 80 below 1990 levels by 2050.

These residual emissions will be due mainly to release in the atmosphere from banks, with any reductions in those emissions due to limited and continued end of life recovery and destruction.

The United States has made it clear that developing countries must sign up to substantial reductions in carbon emissions in Copenhagen.

With regard to emissions reductions, it was difficult to identify potential solutions owing to the absence of information on specific operations.

In addition, we welcome the urgent call made by the German Foreign Minister for more immediate reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.

This is because the so called linking directive the regulation authorizing EU firms to import Certified Emission Reductions from CDM projects bans credits from any forestry project.

Thus, if a group of countries decides to have lower emissions, worldwide emissions will decline by the sum of these countries reductions. Sure, it would be better if all countries curtailed their emissions, but it is already a great help if at least some countries do so.

A meaningful solution to global warming needs to focus on clean energy research and development, instead of fixating on empty promises of reductions in carbon emissions.
