The United Nations, through its Contingent owned Equipment and Property Management Support Section, manages approximately 850 million worth of United Nations owned equipment and approximately 3.5 billion of contingent owned equipment.

The Administration will continue to monitor closely the management of non expendable equipment at field missions.

In 2004, the Property Management Unit provided overall management, guidance and technical oversight in connection with United Nations owned equipment in excess of 850 million.

Requirements for office supplies, rental of office equipment, furniture, communication services, supplies and equipment as well as information technology services, supplies and equipment for the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Management are shown at the overall departmental level.

The Contingent owned Equipment Unit and the Property Management Support Section are managing those assets.

The entire sector continues to suffer from the lack of trained expertise and equipment, widespread corruption and inadequate systems management.

84. A national mine action programme cannot be sustained in the absence of management capabilities, proper equipment and secure funding.

The Committee recommends acceptance of the P 5 post for the Chief of the Contingent owned Equipment and Property Management Support Section.

The Advisory Committee believes that prudent management can result in economies in the acquisition of furniture and equipment and in general operating expenses, especially with regard to acquisition, rental, maintenance and replacement of equipment.

14.29 The provision of 20,100, reflecting a decrease of 3,000 for hospitality redeployed to Executive direction and management, is required for rental and maintenance of the Programme apos s equipment, including scientific equipment in the narcotics laboratory.

The decrease of 150,000 under data processing equipment is due to the fact that the management information software is no longer required.

25. Improvement of administrative and management capability. This is a US 3.3 million programme under which the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been helping OAU to improve its organizational and management systems, including the provision of basic equipment.

Provisions of 395,900 are also being made for the purchase of miscellaneous equipment, including medical equipment and security and safety equipment.

Provision is made for the acquisition of spare parts for the maintenance and repair of miscellaneous equipment as follows office equipment ( 500), data processing equipment ( 1,000), other equipment ( 1,000).

Solid waste management which includes storage, collection, transport and disposal poses different problems. The standard collection technologies imported from industrialized countries are often inappropriate, but appropriate equipment in solid waste management is available.

These expenditures relate to purchase of office furniture and equipment ( 316,300), data processing equipment ( 76,700) and other equipment ( 99,200).
