After all, a weaker currency and better trade balance in some countries necessarily implies a stronger currency and a weaker trade balance in others.

Indeed, if foreign owned enterprises exports are deducted from the total trade volume, the surplus vanishes, because both the overall balance of merchandise trade and the balance of trade in services normally run deficits.

33. The balance of payments deficit on current account widened once again in 1992, this time to nearly US 33 billion, owing to the deterioration of the trade balance (see table 11).

Perhaps most important, a weaker dollar s effect on the trade balance, and thus on growth, is limited by two factors.
