The Law on Protection of Ionizing Radiation and Radiation Security was adopted in 1999.

This law established an administrative unit for protection from ionizing radiation and radiation security within the Federal Ministry of Health, as well as the centre for protection from ionizing radiation, which is based with the Public Health Office.

Its radiation risk assessments provide the scientific foundation used by the International Commission on Radiological Protection in developing its recommendations for radiation protection and by the International Atomic Energy Agency in formulating its Basic Safety Standards for the protection of people and the safety of radiation sources.

A post of Protection Officer was created effective July 1994.

The staff of the Office was strengthened through the recruitment of an Administrative Officer and a Protection Officer.

The Centre for protection against ionizing radiation of the Public Health Institute of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina examines the sources of ionizing radiation.

However, the protection and control of the sources of radiation is also being improved, so it is believed that the risks of exposure to ionizing radiation for persons working on the sources of radiation are reduced.

48. In Dushanbe, Tajikistan, five international posts, including the Chief of Mission, Senior Programme Officer, Administrative Finance Officer, Protection Officer, Logistics Officer and 22 local posts were created in addition to nine Field Officer posts and 19 local posts in the field.

82. As from January 1994, two General Service posts were created to assist the Protection Officer.

State medical supervision gives particular attention to the radiation protection of the population living in radiation contaminated areas and to organizing the provision of a complete, free and balanced diet for affected children.

All sources of ionizing radiation and radioactive substances imported and stored in Lithuania as well as exported from Lithuania are recorded on the accounting system that is maintained by the Radiation Protection Centre.

81. The medical evacuation of the Protection Officer necessitated the deployment of another staff member on mission status.

One post of Protection Officer and three local posts are planned for discontinuation as of 31 December 1994.

The new Law on Protection from Ionizing Radiation is expected to provide for supervision and minimization of the unnecessary exposure of the population to the widely used sources of ionizing radiation in medicine, industry and research.

We commend the efforts of the Agency in enhancing nuclear safety and radiation protection, particularly in the countries of the former USSR.

71. UNESCO has also provided urgently needed supplies to schools and orphanages in both Belarus and Ukraine, as well as training and equipment to the Radiation Medicine Research Clinic in Minsk and the Kiev Radiation Protection Clinic.

Monitoring of the radiation status of the environment and ensuring radiation safety

The radiation from natural sources includes cosmic radiation, external radiation from radionuclides in the earth apos s crust and internal radiation from radionuclides inhaled or ingested and retained in the body.
