Many countries reported that their ministries responsible for the environment, energy and agriculture conduct sector specific research on GHG inventories, vulnerability, and the ozone layer.

Finally, the document includes information about the financial and technical needs and constraints relating to GHG inventories identified by Parties in their initial national communications.

Several Parties expressed a need to train personnel in the compilation and analysis of GHG inventories, and to keep abreast of refinements to the IPCC methodologies.

Parties expressed the need for support in developing professional training packages on GHG inventories, education, training and public awareness, vulnerability and adaptation assessments, mitigation assessments and technology needs assessments.

To date, 164 experts from 90 non Annex I Parties have attended these training workshops and gained knowledge and skills in GHG inventories, V and A assessments and mitigation assessments.

II. Inventories

The GHGIS is vital to producing authoritative GHG information for the COP and ensuring that the large number of annual inventories can be processed in a cost effective, timely and rigorous manner.

Annex I Parties that are Parties to the Kyoto Protocol would still be subject to rigorous review of their national systems, GHG inventories and policies implemented or planned to achieve their targets.

Several Parties expressed a need for the training of personnel in the compilation and analysis of GHG inventories as well as in order to keep abreast of refinements to the IPCC methodologies.

The SBI further noted that the next CGE hands on training workshop on GHG inventories, for the Asia region, is scheduled to be held in Shanghai, China, from 8 to 12 February 2005.
