Three new departments had been created the Department for Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development, the Department for Economic and Social Information and Policy Analysis and the Department for Development Support and Management Services.

That restructuring involved the establishment of three new departments the Department for Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development, the Department of Economic and Social Information and Policy Analysis and the Department of Development Support and Management Services.

The respective functions in the economic and social areas were transmitted to the newly created Department of Economic and Social Development.

In the Department for Development Support and Management Services (formerly the Department of Economic and Social Development) 10 (48 per cent) out of 21 actions examined had also been exempted.

Other delegations stressed the importance of coordinating activities among the Department for Development Support and Management Services, the Department for Economic and Social Information and Policy Analysis, the Department for Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

In February 2004, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs launched the Partnerships for Sustainable Development database.

Within the Department of Economic and Social Development, a Special Coordinator for Africa and LDCs was appointed.

In the United Nations Secretariat, the Department of Economic and Social Development Task Force on Women and Development continues its related work.

The Department of Economic and Social Development has presented papers on women in development issues to meetings concerned with population and women.

The Senior Economic Affairs Officer, Financing for Development Office, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, and the Chief, Debt and Development Finance Branch, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, made introductory statements.

As part of the restructuring of the United Nations Secretariat, the Department of Economic and Social Development was established in early 1992, incorporating the responsibilities previously assumed, inter alia, by the Office of the Director General for Development and International Economic Cooperation and the Department of Technical Cooperation for Development.
