Despite substantial progress in the formulation and implementation of national forest policies, deforestation and forest degradation continue at an alarming rate.

While forest biodiversity continues to decline as a result of deforestation, forest degradation and associated fragmentation of forest habitats, strong efforts are now being made to reverse this trend by restoring the forest functions in degraded forest landscapes.

The Challenge calls for the restoration of forest landscapes to benefit people and nature and contribute to reversing the trends of forest loss and degradation.

The use of satellite imagery to create a database of vegetation types, forest degradation and urban development was demonstrated.

To this end, forest restoration, the natural expansion of forest and the establishment of plantation forests have helped, to some extent, in countering degradation of forest ecosystems and to bring environmental, commercial and social benefits to society.

Efforts to defeat poverty and pursue sustainable development will be in vain if degradation and natural resource depletion, including loss of forests and illegal activities in the forest sector, continue unabated.
