Mauritania s leaders quit ECOWAS, the West African regional grouping, to join the union formed by the North African countries.

The West African Network for Peacebuilding has been outstanding in this field, working to strengthen regional conflict prevention capacities, in close cooperation with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Fund for Solidarity and Economic Development of the West African Economic Community (FOSIDEC), at Ouagadougou, became the subregional focal point for the seven West African member countries in October 1993.
