This branch of law is now an independent field of study as most governments has become part of the world trade, as members of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

(a) To promote appreciation and use of UNCITRAL texts, the International Trade Law Branch Division should increase the range and breadth of its technical assistance in the field of trade law reform.

At that session, UNCITRAL gave guidance to the International Trade Law Branch (subsequently renamed International Trade Law Division) on how to increase cooperation with other organizations that formulate rules on international trade.

Through its International Trade Law Branch, the Office of Legal Affairs assists the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law in the elaboration of modern and harmonized laws as well as non legislative texts aimed at facilitating international trade.

To achieve this, the Branch Division should formulate a strategy to work jointly with funding agencies supporting trade related programmes

The plenary shall consist of the members of the facilitative branch and the enforcement branch.

The new structure includes an Office of the Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights and five separate branches the Legislation and Prevention of the Discrimination Branch, the International Instruments Branch, the Special Procedures Branch, the Communications Branch and the Technical and Advisory Branch.
