Potassium has one electron in its outermost shell.

Sodium wants to lose its one electron in its valence shell.

Everything in this first group has one electron in its outermost shell.

So an electron would rather go to another shell, which is the fourth shell, rather than backfill the 3d shells.

You only have one electron in the s subshell of the first energy shell.

In the case of lithium, you have one electron in your outermost shell, right?

And so the first electron will go right here in the 1s energy shell.

It takes more energy to cram an electron back into the 3d shell, back there.

And as it disappears, an electron from a shell farther out jumps in and takes its place.

And then the next place an electron might want to be might be in the third shell, right?

Now what does this tell me about, you know, this one has one electron in its outermost shell.

Well, if it lost that one electron, then it will have eight electrons in its outermost shell, right?

This column, right here, which we learned were the alkali metals, this has one electron in its outermost shell.

And if this is a cross section, that third electron is going to reside in it in a probability shell around that.

So an X ray comes in in the diagram on the left and it knocks out an electron from the inner shell of an atom.

In order for them to get to the magic number eight in their outermost shell the easiest way for them to do it is just to get rid of that one valence electron they have in their outermost shell.

One is its shell, its energy shell.

And actually, you fill one electron here, another electron here, then another electron there.
