Modern public health is often concerned with addressing determinants of health across a population.

It is vital that women's health promotion evolves to meet changes in the determinants of health.

In March 2005, the Commission, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), organized a meeting on social determinants of health.

III. DETERMINANTS OF THE CHANGE IN FLOWS

Recognizing the vital importance of the underlying determinants of health, the World Health Assembly recently established, for a three year period, an important commission composed of leading policymakers and practitioners, in order to study the social dimensions of health.

We can be heartened by initiatives by government, researchers, health professionals and diverse communities of women to attend thoughtfully and energetically to women's health concerns. We can be encouraged by the broader understanding of the determinants of women's health.

So what are the determinants?

There is considerable congruity between the Commission's mandate and the underlying determinants of health dimension of the right to health, as well as other interconnected human rights such as adequate housing, food and water.

The existing UNICEF analytical framework (see annex) has proven useful in the analysis of health and nutrition outcomes and their determinants among mothers and children.

ESCAP works on determinants of fertility, management of information systems for mother and child health and family planning programmes, and on studies on the acceptance of family planning.

The Strategy provides a framework to guide legislative, policy and program work towards improving the health of women in Canada and creates a vision for a multi sectoral, interdisciplinary, determinants of health approach with operational and horizontal policy commitments to address women's health issues.

Recognizing that health and nutrition outcomes are not the results of action in the health and nutrition sectors alone, UNICEF will build on its intersectoral experience to promote innovative approaches to address immediate and underlying determinants of maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition.

Cultural beliefs and practices associated with causes and treatment of illness, and other lifestyle behaviors, are important determinants of women's health status, and in the prevention of morbidity and mortality.

In accordance with international human rights law, realizing the right to health requires access not only to timely and appropriate health care, but also to the crucial underlying determinants of health.1 These include factors that influence health such as safe drinking water and food, adequate sanitation and housing, healthy work and environmental conditions, and so on.
