An unknown number of deportees perished during the process.

On 23 January 1993, 13 temporary deportees were returned

3. Notes with satisfaction the return of a number of deportees to the occupied Palestinian territory, and calls upon Israel to facilitate the return of the remainder

Regrettably, Israel had made little progress in fulfilling its obligations, which included withdrawing from Palestinian cities, halting violence and destruction, releasing Palestinian prisoners and allowing the return of deportees.

292. On 15 December 1993, the year long expulsion of Hamas and Islamic Jihad activists came to an end when 197 of the remaining 215 deportees returned from southern Lebanon.

The Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs, Mr. Edward Djerejian, had made a number of promises, including the return of Palestinian deportees to the occupied territories.

A positive development during the period covered by the Special Committee apos s twenty sixth report was the return to the occupied territories in stages of a number of long term deportees.

Similarly, in the short term, and in consonance with the spirit of Washington, Israel is required to take concrete and urgent steps to ensure the release of prisoners and the return of deportees.

291. On 3 December 1993, it was reported that the PLO had presented the Government of Israel with a list of 51 recent deportees whom it stated should be allowed to return immediately.

10.3 According to counsel for the complainant, following this programme, the Swedish Foreign Ministry sent two senior representatives to Egypt to discuss with the Government of Egypt how the two deportees had been treated.

294. On 21 December 1993, it was reported that the remaining 65 ex deportees had remained in prison and that between 3 and 6 had been placed in administrative detention for a period of six months.
