The United States Government, together with our partners in the western hemisphere, stood with the people of Guatemala in opposing the autogolpe of former President Serrano last year.

The European Community and its member States express their utmost concern about the decision of President Serrano on 25 May 1993 to break off constitutional order and, in particular, to dissolve Parliament and the Supreme Court.

The Community and its member States strongly urge President Serrano to re establish without delay the democratic institutions which are fundamental to a successful conclusion of the peace process and the full observance of human rights.
