The Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) attacked two convoys that were being escorted by Government security forces on 23 July on the Nyala El Fasher road.

He also visited the Kalma camp, about 20 km from Nyala, the largest camp in the area, hosting about 90,000 IDPs.

Some 240 families who fled to Amkassara, a village about 37 kilometres north of Nyala, have been unable to return to harvest their crops.

The third incident occurred on 29 March when an AMIS patrol dispatched to investigate reports of a clash north east of Nyala came under fire.

In addition to accessing regular prison facilities, the State Director of National Security in Nyala (southern Darfur) allowed UNMIS to visit the town's national security detention facility for the first time.

The descent into lawlessness by the armed movements, unprecedented criminality in Nyala and violence against humanitarian workers and property in some camps for internally displaced persons is a dangerous pattern that demands urgent corrective action by the parties.

These two species are only found on the northern side of the valley while another rare endemic the mountain nyala (Tragelaphus buxtoni) is restricted to the southern side, and now survives at higher altitudes than its original habitat as the lower slopes are heavily farmed.

Second, on 22 March, two employees of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) suffered injuries, one of them seriously, during an apparent ambush on their convoy of clearly marked vehicles on the road from Nyala to Kass in Southern Darfur.
