They give meaning to our lives.

And it motivated me to recover.

These instincts are essential for survival in both real and virtual worlds.

That is a deeply humanizing vision of our lives, and it's a completely different vision than the one that lies at the heart of this economic model.

We don't need a belief in God to be good or to have meaning in us.

I mean, the only real product of our life, at the end, was a failure.

Modern science provides a humbling perspective.

This is about food and water, soil and climate, the basic practical and economic foundations of our lives.

Our enormously productive economy... Demands that we make consumption our way of life.

One set of ideas or another have simply replaced our biological imperatives in our own lives.

But I would like to talk further about the combination of light and darkness as a quality in our life.

Why should the lamp or the house be an art object, but not our life? as Michel Foucault puts it.

And so many of the talks here at TED are about meaning, about bringing meaning to our lives in all kinds of different ways, through technology, through art, through science, so much so that I think we focus so much on that side of our lives, that we haven't given enough attention to the food and the water and the shelter, and what we need to raise the kids.

And there were no superficial conversations as we shared our innermost thoughts, our fears, and our hopes for life after the spinal ward.

The same norm must apply to cyberspace, which is critical to our everyday life, economic well being, and security.

But you realize you resubmit yourself to losing control in a really wonderful way, which we think provides a lot of meaning to our lives and is quite gratifying.

It should be security with a human face, because it must deal directly with political, economic, environmental and social aspects of our lives in a comprehensive manner.

Violence has a constant presence in human societies, but in some cases it becomes a preponderant element, interrupting that which we consider the normal development of our lives.

And I think that is the quintessence of this 18 minute talk that there is no good lighting that is healthy and for our well being without proper darkness.

They have contradictions, they uphold principles that are incommensurable with each other whatever it is and yet these ideals give meaning and purpose to our lives as cultures and as individuals.

All we need to do is reach what he calls longevity escape velocity that is, the point at which we can extend life sufficiently to allow time for further scientific progress to permit additional extensions, and thus further progress and greater longevity.
